Waste & Recycling Educator

Location: Manchester Building B - 655B 25 Avenue S.E.
Union/Position: CUPE Local 38/Part-Time Limited Term (up to 18 months)
Compensation: Pay Grade 6, $21.84 - 24.02 - 25.23 - 26.49 - 27.81 - 29.21 per hour
Hours of Work: This part-time position will work an average of 17.5 hours per week.
Business Unit Information:
Waste & Recycling Services (W&RS) provides waste collection, disposal and recycling services for over one million Calgarians. We manage three landfills, 50 community recycling depots and are expanding to provide curbside recycling in 2009. You will play a significant role in ensuring Calgary's environment is protected for current and future generations.
Responsibilities:
The Waste and Recycling Educator supports residential programs by reaching customers directly with waste information and education. Community outreach strategies encourage participation in blue cart recycling, waste reduction, skills and technologies through engagement in a variety of environments: in the community, at recycling facilities, and at special/ community events.
Primary duties include:
- represent The City within Calgary communities, facilities, and at events to educate citizens about blue cart recycling;
- promote existing waste reduction programs at public events;
- assist in the preparation and implementation of blue cart programs;
- organize, track, evaluate, and maintain program information;
- respond to citizen inquiries.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will possess a High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) and post-secondary courses in Communications, Marketing, Environmental Studies, Education, or a related field with a minimum of one year of direct customer service experience including an environment where you dealt with complaints or difficult customers. A valid Alberta Class 5 Operator's License with no more than six demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending as well as the ability
to obtain a City of Calgary Driver's License and intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office PowerPoint are required. The applicant must possess the ability to engage and interact with the public and have excellent customer service and communication skills.
