News for EE Groups

Making Connections in the EE Community

EE curriculum development collaborators wanted. A fantastic opportunity to get involved in creating a new week-long outdoor/experiential environmental education program for the Wildrose School Division. It will be based on-site in the mountains near Nordegg, AB. Please contact Rhonda Shippey at the following email address if you are interested in contributing to this pilot project.

Turning news into action with "good2gether". Imagine you are reading a climate change article in a major online newspaper like the New York Times. Just as you say to yourself, "What can I do?!" you notice the "connect to cause" link. With one click you can connect to the websites of multiple non-profit organizations that are working on this very issue - in your region and all over the world. Your organization can create a profile on the good2gether platform and good2gether will make sure a "connect to cause" link to your do-good website is made discoverable on major news websites so that your work is promoted in the right place at the right time to increase funding and volunteer opportunities. This service is currently available for free in the United States and is slated for Canadian availability in 2009/2010.

Might Canadians and Americans Cooperate to Combat Climate Change?

Canadian Liberals and U.S. supporters of Al Gore suggest similar strategic plans to combat climate change through "pay for what you burn, not what you earn" tax incentives. Visit the Liberal's "Green Shift" website and compare Dion's plan to Al Gore's strategic plan in his incendiary "General Challenge to Repower America" speech. The similarities are stunning!

Advancing EE in Alberta

ACEE will poll Albertans to answer key questions about their environmental literacy, to help EE stakeholders ensure that our education programs hit the mark! Read about this project, to suggest a question that should be in our poll.

ACEE has a strategic plan that shows how we will deliver on three key outcomes: 1. Society increasingly values, supports, and implements EE; 2. Environmental educators more effectively mobilize learners to practice environmental stewardship; 3. A coordinated network of stakeholders collaborate to advance EE in Alberta. Download and comment on our strategic plan (just 6 pages long!).

2008 is the Year of the Frog

Start preparing for September by integrating amphibian content into your science, social studies and environmental ethics programs. As many as a third to 50% of the world's frogs and other amphibians are endangered, as rates of extinctions have increased exponentially in the past 15 years. International scientists predict a mass die-off unparalleled since the extinction of the dinosaurs. Threatening factors include habitat destruction, pollution, over collection, invasive species, climate change, human overpopulation, and the Chytrid fungus, imported to the west for human pregnancy detection research in the 1930's. See how the Amphibian Ark is addressing this problem in a race against the clock.

How will we solve the problems we've created? Watch the moving five minute documentary with David Attenborough on the almost extinct Golden Frog of Panama - the "waving frog" that puts an amphibian face on amphibian issues.
