In 2012-2013 we are shifting our focus to developing a new program – Communities of Practice for Environmental Educators in Alberta. But fear not, there are plenty of opportunities for professional development for environmental educators! Below is a list of some of the organizations who offer training, courses, conferences, and resources to help you improve your practice. Click on the title for more information.

Grants for Professional Development

TD Training Grants offers up to $1000 per year per organization for training opportunities. Grants can be used for participation fees/tuition for courses from recognized training institutions, workshops, conferences etc. |

PricewaterhouseCoopers Leadership Grant Program offers up to $2,500 for individual staff members or volunteers for professional development opportunities of their own design and up to $5,000 for teams of two or more staff members and/or volunteers (including the applicant) for professional development opportunities of their own design |

First Calgary Knowledge Builders Grant Program offers up to $2,500 for organizations in Calgary and surrounding area for professional development opportunities that address leadership, planning, teamwork or organizational development. |

The Banff Centre Leadership Development Program offers a variety of scholarships for non-profit organization leaders who would like to attend their programs. |
Non-Profit Organizational Development
 |
Volunteer Edmonton offers workshops and events on a variety of topics of relevance to the non-profit and volunteer sector. |

Volunteer Calgary offers training in fund development, human resources, volunteer management, governance and leadership. |
 |
Alberta Culture Board Development Program offers a variety of services to the non-profit sector at no charge. They offer workshops and presentations on a variety of topics from strategic planning to fund development. |

Vitalize is a conference offered by Alberta Culture specifically focused on the voluntary sector. |
 |
HR Council has a pile of great resources for non-profit organizations from HR policies to sample job descriptions. |
Leadership
 |
The Banff Centre Leadership Development Program offers intensive residential experiences that bring together leaders from all fields. Scholarships are available for non-profit organizations. |

Leadership Calgary is a 10 month community based leadership program run by Volunteer Calgary. It brings together individuals from all sectors to explore leadership in their communities. |

Leadership Edmonton offers a 10 month Pioneer Leadership program that brings together individuals from all sectors to explore leadership in their communities. |

Environmental Education Theory and Practice

Green Teacher Magazine is offering a wide range of webinars hosted by experts from across North America. You can also access past recordings if you subscribe to this magazine. |

University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point offers a Master’s Degree in environmental education through distance education. You can also take their courses without commiting to a full master’s degree. |

The Civic Ecology Lab at Cornell University has started offering on-line environmental education courses on a variety of topics. In 2012, they offered one on Urban EE and a second on Measuring Environmental Education Outcomes. |

Taking It Global (TIG) is a global youth network based on-line. They offer e-courses, in-service sessions, and webinars. One of the recent e-courses was on the topic of Environmental Stewardship. Their courses focus on youth engagement. |

Royal Roads University calls itself the ‘university for working professionals’. A program of interest to environmental educators is the MA in Environmental Education and Communication. |

University of Calgary Faculty of Education offers a certificate in Education for the Environment. You can take just the certificate or combine it with the other certificate programs for an MA. |

Conferences
Topic Specific Opportunities

Waterlution is a national organization that explores our relationship with water. They offer a variety of opportunities to learn about specific watersheds as well as general water learning sessions. |

The Interpretive Guides Association delivers training and offers professional accreditation for guides working in the mountain parks. They offer workshops and sessions on a variety of topics that may of interest to environmental educators.
