This is a series of blogs profiling the showcase schools participating in the Mayor’s Environment Expo in Calgary.

What are you doing to cut down on the waste you send to the landfills? What are you doing to encourage others? The Eco Club students at Blessed Cardinal Newman might just inspire you to do more.

As part of their Showcase School project for the Mayor’s Environment Expo, a team of Grades 6-9 students are implementing a waste reduction program in their school. They understand that reducing waste can substantially minimize our impact on the environment – and that they have a role in this.

One of their initiatives is to encourage recycling at lunch. Every noon hour, the students monitor the recycling bins and talk to their peers about the proper way to recycle.

“To date, we have 600 pounds of recycled waste,” says teacher, Tara Hobart. “We’ve never recycled at lunch time before so this is a new learning curve for all the kids in the school. It’s really increased awareness on the recycling program and how much stuff we can recycle.”

But the Eco Club is learning that there’s more to reducing waste than recycling – it’s also about reducing and reusing.

They’re putting this learning into practice by leading on waste free lunches, educational presentations, paperless campaigns, and even creating garbage-inspired art.

As a result of their determination and creativity, they’re seeing bigger bags of recycling, less garbage and less waste all together. And they’re also helping The City reach its goal of diverting 80 per cent of waste from the landfills by 2020.

Join us at the 2012 Mayor’s Environment Expo, June 5-7 at the Municipal Building and be inspired by today’s youth leaders.

Read about what other showcase schools are doing to protect land, air and water.

The Mayor’s Environment Expo thanks Encana and Calgary Transit for their partnership in the Showcase School program. Encana is sponsoring a $250 grant exclusive to the Showcase Schools. Calgary Transit is providing Showcase Schools with free transportation to and from the Expo.

Having safe drinking water is a fundamental human need and human right for every man, woman and child. People need clean water to maintain their personal health and dignity. Yet 884 million people around the world live without improved drinking water.
Diarrhea from drinking unsafe water occupies a leading position among diseases as a cause of death and illness, killing 1.8 million and causing approximately 4 billion cases of illness annually. 90% of diarrheal deaths are borne by children under five, mostly in developing countries.
For every child that dies, countless others suffer from poor health and lost educational opportunities leading to poverty in adulthood. Having safe drinking water is essential in breaking the cycle of disadvantage and poverty by improving health, ability go to school, and strength to work.

A Possible Solution
CAWST is a Canadian non-profit organization focused on the principle that clean water changes lives. Safe water and basic sanitation are fundamentals necessary to empower the world’s poorest people and break the cycle of poverty. CAWST believes that the place to start is to teach people the skills they need to have safe water in their homes. CAWST transfers knowledge and skills to organizations and individuals in developing countries through education, training and consulting services. This ever expanding network can motivate individual households to take action to meet their own water and sanitation needs. Since 2001, CAWST’s client network has helped 4.6 million people get better water and sanitation.
CAWST values equitable opportunities, sustainable solutions and collaborative and inclusive processes. We recognise and accept differences in cultural, religious and political processes.

Youth Wavemakers Program Overview
CAWST’s Youth Wavemakers is a unique water education program that informs, engages, encourages action, and celebrates the impact that North American youth are having on global and local water and sanitation issues.
ACEE received the best type of mail a few months ago - an unexpected donation from a Junior Achievement company.

Everyone loves getting real mail! ACEE received the best type of mail a few months ago – an unexpected donation! This donation came from a Junior Achievement company. Junior Achievement has the mandate to “help students develop an entrepreneurial attitude, a solid and practical understanding of business and finance and a commitment to community”. The program in Southern Alberta reaches 18,000 students annually.

Our surprise piece of mail came from Way2Grow Inc. A portion of the profits from their company go to a charity and they chose us! I wanted to know more about this youth led business so I asked Inara Dattadeen, a member of the sales and marketing team, at Way2Grow Inc. to tell me more about their company.

What were the products that you sold?

We sold indoor planting kits. There were two types: cherry tomato seeds or paper white bulbs. Each kit consisted of everything you needed to grow it (a pot, the proper amount of soil, the seeds or bulb, step-by-step instructions) as well as information on our company. ACEE was also mentioned in the brochure in each kit so that people were aware of where a portion of the money was going to. The kits were also biodegradable and environmentally-friendly.

Why did you choose an environmental focus for your business?

Part of the Junior Achievement mandate is to have a product or service that is environmentally-friendly, therefore we thought it would be a good idea to just make the whole thing that way and we’d also be doing our part to help the environment and encourage others to do the same by purchasing our product.

Why did you choose to donate the money to the ACEE?

As a company, we thought ACEE was a good choice to receive our donation because you are a local organization making Albertans more aware of the environment and the importance of conservation and sustainability through education.

Do you plan to pursue an environmental career?

I personally am not sure what kind of career I want to go into, but when I was younger I did strongly consider being an environmentalist and was very interested in different types of storms, global warming, climate change, etc. It is definitely an option as there are so many different paths one can take when it comes to career choices.

The Junior Acheivement program finished in March, so Way2Grow is no longer selling their planting kits.

Thanks to the Way2Grow team for their donation!

Christina Pickles is the Program Coordinator for ACEE. A summer Naturalist position in 1998 hooked her on environmental education. After finishing a geography degree at the University of Calgary, she took her first full time job in education delivering programs for Ducks Unlimited at the Bow Habitat Station in Calgary. She then took a position with the University of Calgary, spending four years delivering and developing residential school programs on earthworms, forests and everything in between. Before coming to ACEE she spent two years in Edmonton with Alberta Environment’s One Simple Act program in Edmonton. She and her husband now live in Calgary close to the Bow River.

Students at the Calgary Science School use bike power to generate energy.

This is a series of blogs profiling the showcase schools participating in the Mayor’s Environment Expo in Calgary.

The students at the Calgary Science School are learning just how much energy we use on a daily bases. Moreover, they have a greater appreciation for how difficult it is to go off the grid and make a classroom carbon neutral.

The idea behind the project was to power the classroom using a stationary bicycle.

Students volunteered to peddle the energy generating bicycle. It didn’t take too long before they realized just how much energy was required to make the classroom carbon neutral, or powered solely from the bike. It was determined that they would need four bicycles to make it carbon neutral.

“The biggest impact this project has had on students is that they have more appreciation for how much energy we use in our classroom and it enforces them to have more awareness of energy conservation,” explains Greg Neil, Grade 5 teacher. “Because of this project, I’ve noticed a big change with the students taking simple actions to reduce wasteful electricity.”

Their showcase school project, Carbon Neutral, for the 2012 Mayor’s Environment Expo will include powering an interactive display of the Weaselhead using the stationary bicycle.

The 2012 Mayor’s Environment Expo takes place June 5-7 at the Municipal Building in Calgary.

All Showcase Schools qualify for a $250 grant from Encana to help with their projects. Free transportation to and from the Expo is provided by Calgary Transit
