Environmental Needs Assessment Summary Report
The Alberta Council for Environmental Education (ACEE) conducted this Needs Assessment to help fulfill its mission of working collaboratively to advance environmental education in Alberta. ACEE plans to provide EE professionals and their groups with relevant professional development opportunities. Results from this survey will help inform that work. The goals of this survey were: 1) to find out more about EE professionals and organizations so that ACEE may better support collaborative work, 2) to identify the needs of EE professionals and organizations, 3) to ensure that the ACEE program meets these needs, and 4) to create a baseline data set to help ACEE evaluate the success of its capacity-building program. The survey was composed of four sections: 1) Program Development Needs 2) Organizational Development Needs 3) Non-Profit Groups only 4) Feedback on ACEE
Respondents
71 respondents completed the survey, representing 56 different groups from the following areas:
- NGO’s: 59.2%
- K-12 School Board: 8.5%
- University/College: 16.9%
- Funder: 1.4%
- Government: 14.1%
Teacher Training:
Of the 71 respondents, 30 said that their groups conduct teacher training.
Approximately one third of these 30 respondents said that they train fewer than 100 teachers per year;
Approximately one third said that they train “hundreds” of teachers per year;
The remaining respondents said that they train either less than 20-30 teachers
per year, or 1000 teachers per year.
Alberta curriculum addressed the following percentages of respondents’ groups:Alberta Curriculum:
- Elementary Science: 76.4%
- Jr. High Social: 38.2%
- Jr. High Science: 61.8%
- Social Studies 10, 20, 30: 27.3%
- Elementary Social: 54.5%
- Chemistry 10, 20, 30: 14.5%
- Biology 10, 20, 30: 41.8%
- Physics 10, 20, 30: 10.9%
